    L-Carnitine is an amino acid that aids in metabolism and cellular function. Because your body can make it on its own, it is considered a nonessential amino acid. However, your body makes it by synthesizing it from two essential amino acids, methionine and lysine, which your body can’t make on its own and must be consumed from food or supplements. Because many people are deficient in these two amino acids, they are also deficient in L-Carnitine.
